WOW!Excuse my indulgence folks, but I have just this minute got in from an hour on the river, and I have just, about five minutes ago, caught my first ever trout on a dry fly.
What a rush! It was a big blighter as well - or for this river. Must have been ten, eleven inches long? They don't half put up a struggle, don't they?!
Really, really pleased, stalked, seen rising beneath a tree, tricky little sideways very short casts, long leader, (couple of bits of mono tied together, 10 ft or so) and Greenwells Glory on the other end. Took about six casts, breath held for each one, then the little beauty took!
Beached it too, Jonty, somewhere suitable here.

Thats fantastic Snorg. 10/11 inches is a bloody good size for a wild brown on any small water, it's a grat feeling catching on a dry fly isn't it?? I think the tension bcause you're really targetting specific fish rather than fishing the water makes it a real buzz.
Well done that man!!

Jonty, Buzz isn't in it - I'm still shaking! That has got to be one of the most satisfying things I have ever done!
Possibly nearer 10 than 11... I do have a tendency to exaggerate over that kind of range...
Lost another three flippin' flies though. Not up trees (I'm getting better at missing those!) but I think I must be whipping them off or somehting, with badly timed forward casts. I was concerned I wasn't tying the knots properly, but I didn't do anything different with this last, and it held fine with the fish on. They all did - a couple of water knots on the leader as well. So maybe I'm snapping them off on the casts, anyone any thoughts?
I still brought the fish in a bit early I think, but I've only got 2lb line on the end of the leader, and I really didn't want to lose this one! Hooked nice and cleanly though, so everything went ok.

That's why women can't park - we can't judge distances coz we're always being told this much <holds hands about 6" apart> is 10"

Hey - I'm not having that - it was definitely bigger than 6!

Now I don't want you to think that I am going to post here every time I catch a fish - I have a vainglorious blog for that sort of thing but I've just had an hour or so on the river and caught... two brownies!
A tiddler, and one that was another very nice fish, 10 - 11 inches. (Yes it was! Gribbie, don't start!)
Both on Greenwell's Glory... fished wet this time Seems to work well on this river. Am V, pleased!
So, one last time:

I take it you were pleased then?
In your "INAPPROPRIATE SPORTING GESTURES", is there an umpah band for that very special occasion when you hook a salmon with a fly??

Should I ever get to hook a salmon, I cannot imagine how I'm going to react!

Bazzer - caught three trout now on the same fly - Greenwell's Glory. It's looking a bit tatty now and is starting to unravel, so I've retired it and stuck it in my cap...

That's it mate and I bet in 10yrs. you will still be able to tell each flies story.
Keep going mate.

Absolutely love it, this river fishing, totally addictive. I want Q's 3 rated brook rod now...

Yeah, I can imagine.
Seriously though, I think that will be my next buy. My current rod is OK, but it's rated 5/6 7.5 ft with a 4 weight line. It all works - I mean I'm catching fish, but I can well see how a softer, lighter option would work better on these small rivers. I haven't caught a fish on a text book cast yet - they've all been little flicks under trees and the such...
So, my plan is to get a decent 3/4 weight 7 ft rod (small rivers will always be the majority of my fishing, I'm pretty sure) and get a 6 weight line for my current rod for the odd trip to the reservoirs, smaller waters etc. It's maybe not ideal for these waters, but I reckon I should get away with it...

Don't even try. They are much too heavy, best you stick with flies mate.

Sound choices, although I'd be tempted to look at a 10' 7wt to add to the armoury too. It'll give you a far better chance of control over any of the larger 'bows that fisheries inevitably hold..............and you're bound to hit one of them sooner or later, even if it's just the odd trip

Yeah, sounds sensible - in time. Thing is though, I can see myself spending a reasonable amount on a brook rod, because that's my main interest and already I'm getting an idea of what you are paying for.
Ain't cheap this minimalist living is it?!
Where's KC when you need her? I'm sure she'd tell me to make do with an old garden cane and a length of twine!

Fly rod, fly reel and spare spool.........not much change out of £1000 (there's a pic in the fishing quiz somewhere).
PS - The fish have never read any of the textbooks.
