How Do I catch them - going to the coast East - Norfolk in a week or so for a few days with the kids & boat.  Very Happy

How do I catch whelks - anybody know ?

Also any advice on what fish we can have a go for off that coast, or in the Wash, would be gratefully received  Confused

I am thinking a mile or two out at the most - as it's our first time with this boat & it's not really what you'd call "ocean going" Embarassed

Not actually sure we'll get much fishing done though  Sad  The girls & boys (teens) - seem far more interested in boring things - like the water-skis & tow deck  Rolling Eyes  Laughing  Laughing

if my part of the east coast (shotley penninsular) is anything to go by it`s crab city at the moment Mad  and if your bait is on the bottom it wont last long????

my brother is fishing patenoster style at the moment to keep his bait off the bottom.
there are a few bass (to small to keep) coming out at the moment and a few eals?? but thats about it ...
i think we need a good storm to freshen things up???

whelks... i`m not so sure of?? maybe you could set up an ambush or get your beaters to flush them out to standing guns Shocked  Laughing

That's just silly  Rolling Eyes

Everybody knows they can only be harpooned, on a Tuesday night, whilst wearing Speedos and an eyepatch!!!

I actually made a living from whelking back in the 90's.

I used strings of pots which were basically plastic tubs with 2" of concrete  poured into the base with a large nail set in it. One side of the tub is cut out and net loosely stretched across the hole with a entrance hole formed in the netting.

The pot bait is positioned on the nail and the pots are then lowered to the sea bed and left for 24 hours.

Here's a picture of the pots where you can just see the netting on the green one.

Yes, any old fish will do, the smellier the better. We used to use some really rank stuff at times and it still attracted the whelks.

Different areas fish differently. Here off the Dorset coast the is plenty of good ground well within 2 miles of the coast.

I found that clean ground, not muddy, was best, so gravel or sand bottom would be OK.
